KEVIN H. MAXWELL is most enthralled by the challenge of portrairture, though he does city and landscapes as well, as he seeks to discover his subject's journey through the portrait either created live or from references. He has exhibited in numerous group shows since he first moved to NYC from SLC, Utah in 1987, including River Gallery, Casa Frela Gallery, Leslie/Lohman Gallery and Community Gallery, GMHC anually shows. He has recently had solo shows at IPTAR West and Community Gallery. He was awarded a full Fine Art scholarship to University of Utah, where he received his BFA in 1987. He received his Master's degree in Art Therapy from New York University in 1990. He works as an Art therapist at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. He is both an accredited art therapist, ATR, and a Licensed Creative Art Therapist, LCAT in the state of New York.
This series of etchings, titled "Subway Series", is a result of Mr. maxwell's commute through the arteries of New York’s subways armed with a sketchbook and an array of pencils and pens. In the subway car his antennae muses over the tenor of the fluid community of which he has suddenly become a member. Various members may intrigue him. There may be only a few precious moments to directly and accurately capture the narrative in front of him. After the inevitable occurs, he is left with a drawing (which may be developed later) and questions about the journey of his subject, as well as the one we are all on.
