GIRL WITH GUN

Her landlord was a retired jockey
with chronic pneumonia and tiny red boots.

He was Scottish and she was French,
but for the life of me I can’t remember her name.

Something tells me it was a hockey player’s name,
a fast name – a name that makes you think of roaring

arena crowds and beers chugged by the quart.

Her apartment was wide and hollow
with just a table and a TV and a tall stand-up mirror

blurred at the base by the nose prints of her dog.

The gun was in a kitchen drawer with a pair of scissors
and the phone bill.

I left after that, walking past the landlord

who was wheezing between coughs,
his lungs in a boil of hot rattles that snapped and danced

like pebbles on the hard marble.
